Videogames 3d Graphics Engine Test Today

Before I start writing this post, I’m going to clarify that this isn’t one of the new 3d games that requires you to wear those 3d shutter glasses.  It’s an engine test that showcases the 3d graphics engine.  The company releasing this graphics test is called Unknown Worlds Entertainment.  They are small indie game developer that has released a few games in the past.  In my opinion they have a great track record.  The engine test in question is for a pc game called Natural Selection 2.  They are releasing this test build of the game to those who have preordered it.  It isn’t the full game, but it should showcase the stunning graphics and sound effects that they plan to use.  Its basically going to wet the players appetite and also used to coax more preorders from those who haven’t already done so yet.  Why I am I interested in it?  Because from what I’ve seen of the3d  engine, it looks very pretty.  The visuals that it can render in real time is quite impressive.

The engine in question is called the Spark engine and contains plenty of features such as real time lighting and shadows, ambient occlusion, normal mapping and bump mapping.  It also has a nifty color correction tool as well.  I’ve actually played around with the Spark editor and it looks very flexible.  It looks so cool and easy to use, I’m thinking about using it to render portions of my new 3d portfolio.  I suggest any of you 3d animators out there to give it a try.  You get access to the game(when its finished) and all the tools for only 20 bucks.  The final version will even have a  movie scene editor and the animations will be able to have particle and ragdoll effects implemented.  I’ll talk about it more after I have tested it.  It should be released sometime later on today.  Hopefully they’ll include some official documentation on getting our own 3d models and textures into the game.
