New Tron Trailer With A Young CGI Head Of Jeff Bridges As CLU
There’s a new Tron Legacy trailer out right now. It features a montage of scenes with the character of CLU. In case you didn’t know already, a young CGI version of Jeff Bridges will be one of the possible villains in the movie. I did a post a few months back and I broke down how I thought the effects were being handled. I can honestly say with this new trailer, I do not know which way they are going. I at first thought they were using effects techniques in the benjamin button movies. Now, I’m not so sure. While the rendering on the head looks good, the actual face and expressions suffer from the uncanny valley. I think part of the problem is that I have read that they used a current head scan of bridges and that they then used an artist to make it look younger, instead of taking an old lifecast. I’m not certain, but that could be an issue. The animation on the face and muscles don’t look as good as BB’s from a few years ago. The problem I have and I think most other people will have is that if you didn’t know this was a Jeff Bridges movie would you be able to tell that was supposed to be him(or a version of him) in some of the shots?

The subtle expressions in other parts of the face are convincing, but it looks like they need to do mocap on the speech. I hope they tighten it up, because a major part of the publicity for this film is the “young” CGI Jeff Bridges, and as a result, people will look more closely. If they don’t get it right, it will be a critical blow for what appears to be some brilliant design and effects.
