Free Animation vs. Paid Animation

Ok, if you’ve read the title, then you are probably confused.  Is any animation out there free?  The answer is tricky.  Yes, there are animators out there who actually animate for free on projects.  I’m not talking about their own projects either.  If you follow today’s videogame technology, then you know that almost everything out there that is produced uses a 3d game engine.  If you take a look at the pc games coming out today, quite a few come with developer tools.  These tools allow you to change the content of the game around produce your own version of a game.  Its a practice called modding.  Most mods are commercial free and are made by young up and coming animators and programmers.  They all work on their own free time and they do not make any money.  Here you will find 3d modelers and animators that are doing work for free.

Now, while they work for free, they do expect something in return for their hardwork.   Most 3d animators working in mods will put the work on their resume and use it to get a job in the industry.  This practice has gotten many 3d animators foot in the door in the videogames industry.  This is probably the most common place where you will find free animation.  If you are a company or someone looking to contract an animator for work, you most likely will not find any free animators.   Animation takes up way too much time in order to be done correctly.  A good rule to follow is that expensive animation looks expensive.   Cheap animation will look cheap.  You will not be able to get anything of  any real quality for free in the field of 3d animation.

Now if you want to watch animation done by animators for no money,  that’s easy to find.  All over the internet there are free flash animations and cartoons to be found.  Flash movies are quite popular and there are thousands of animators that make them.  Nobody pays them for the animation and its all done with passion and hard work for free.

I need animators/film makers who are willing to work for free on a 3D installation project. Visuals will be converted into 3D for use on 3D capable screens. Email asap if you are interested.

I am seeking an animator (not necessaruly 3D) to work with me on a music video project; no upfront money, but definite benefits available.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much time to do animation at the moment. I’m busy with other things. I would look at the website linkedin to find some animators or AWN.
